Defining Success

“I don’t want to be successful,” said no one ever! There are many self-help gurus and success coaches out in the world and some will say, “I have the key to success and for just $X I will tell you what it is.” Or you may look to other “successful” people and try to do what they do and believe that you will then also become successful. Well, I believe that we all have the key to success and we don’t really need to “buy” it or learn it from someone else. What we need to do is define success and decide what it means to our self as an individual.

So what does being successful really mean? The dictionary definition of success is “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.” So since each one of us has a different “aim or purpose,” we will each need to “become successful” in different ways and one person’s key to success is not going to be the same as someone else’s. Defining success really boils down to defining your purpose. Discovering your purpose or aim is basically developing a vision. After you determine that vision, then you can measure when you have become successful.

So here are some things to keep in mind.

  • Success is based off of accomplishing goals
  • Set your goals to align with your purpose or vision
  • Focus on you and don’t compare yourself to others

Don’t let other people define success for you. Take some time to figure out what you want your definition of success to be. You don’t need to come up with a big grand master plan, just focus on parts of life individually and take it all one step at a time.
