Origami Owl Collection Guide: Living Locket

Origami Owl Living Lockets™ are the most popular items in the Origami Owl jewelry brand. These lockets are what allows you to tell your story through jewelry. They are the epitome of customization and are extremely versatile because the Living Locket can be opened at anytime and its contents can be changed in seconds. Let’s dive into all of the details about Living Lockets!

Living Locket Types

Living Lockets™ can be worn in many different ways. There are locket pendents for necklaces and key chains, lockets for bracelets (and a watch!), and the fantastic ring locket!

The locket pendents are the most diverse in shape and size as well as the most versatile in the way that they can be worn. We’ll talk more about shapes and sizes below, but as I mentioned the locket pendents can be displayed two different ways. You can place it on a chain for a necklace or on a key chain/bag clip to attach it to your keys or to hang off of your purse or bag.

To wear a Living Locket as a bracelet, you can choose either a classic chain or a leather wrap as the band. The leather wraps are very easily interchangeable, so you can have one locket and have the added customization of changing the color or design of the band. The classic chain bracelet is not removable from the locket, but it gives you the added ability to customize it by adding various dangles to the chain band. I am always so amazed by the incredible number of combinations that can be created!

One of our extremely unique lockets is the Locket Watch! This locket includes a timepiece in the center so that you do not have to sacrifice your watch so that you can wear your story. It is an amazing piece of jewelry that you will not be able to find just anywhere. It now also has the option to change the band from stainless steel links to a genuine leather band and back again!

Another extremely unique locket is the Ring Locket! This is personally my favorite primarily because rings have always been my favorite type of jewelry, but also because again it is extremely unique and can’t be found just anywhere.

Living Locket Opening Mechanisms

Depending on the locket type and shape, lockets are opened two different ways. The locket will either have a magnetic hinge closure or a twist closure.

If the locket is round in shape it most likely is a twist closure. This means there are two halves that twist together to form the locket. An added benefit of the twist closure is that as long as the base and the face are the same size the face of the locket is interchangeable.

Lockets that open by way of the magnetic hinge are called Classic lockets and open like a book and stay shut with a strong magnet. The benefit of the Classic locket is that it allows for lockets to be designed with different shapes.

I commonly get asked if one opening mechanism is “safer” than the other. They are both very secure and the only time I recommend one over the other is when choosing a locket for a preteen or young child. If you are concerned with wearing a particular locket around kids who may fiddle with it, read my post about wearing jewelry around kids.

Living Locket Shapes and Sizes

This is where we have all the fun! There are a multitude of different locket shapes and sizes and you never know when they with come out with something brand new and absolutely stunning!

Let’s have a brief chat about sizes first. Lockets basically come in four different sizes, Mini, Medium, Large and Legacy which I usually compare to coins, dime, nickel, quarter, half dollar respectively. The Mini and Legacy size lockets currently only have Classic closures while the Medium and Large size lockets could have either opening mechanism depending on the shape and price point.

In regards to shapes, the most common locket shape is round, but there is also oval (Classic bracelet and ring), heart, heritage (rectangle), teardrop and specialty designs. The specialty designs are amazing and incredible beautiful! These designs would include the Olivia Owl locket and the Spring 2017 Seasonal Exclusive Sunflower locket.

Living Locket Contents

What you put inside your locket and how you change it over time is what makes it “living”. Let’s talk about your options for what to put inside.

The most common items that go inside the lockets are the charms. There are many different charms that can be used to represent almost anything you can think of. You can put multiple charms together to create a theme or tell a story.

Another great addition to your locket is a plate. A plate is a thin metal disc that either has a design or text etched into it. They are used to create a fun or meaningful background in the locket. There are some plates that are already stamped with a design, but there is also the option to inscribe your own words using different templates. These plates come in a medium or large size and in the metal color of your choice.
